Pedro Pablo Kumul Amaya becomes the 16th journalist to be murdered in Mexico in 2022, and the 35th since Andrés Manuel López Obrador became president. Earlier this week, gunmen opened fire upon Kumul Amaya, who combined his work as a reporter at AX Multimedios with that of a cab driver. He was shot and killed while driving his cab in Xalapa, Veracruz, according to initial investigations.

The international human rights organization for the defense of freedom of expression and the right to information under Article 19, has urged the Mexican state administration to investigate the facts.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous and deadly countries for journalists. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the Latin American country ranks sixth in terms of mortality for media professionals. The number of journalists whose murders remain unsolved has risen to 28 in the last ten years.
