A total of 94 people from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were rescued from an abandoned truck in Veracruz, Mexico. The immigrants were taken into the custody of the Mexican National Migration Institute. Their destination was the United States.

The event was confirmed by the director of Attention to Migrants of the Veracruz government, Carlos Enrique Escalante, who told The Associated Press that the discovery took place last Wednesday on the Acayucan-Sayula de Aleman highway.

The official explained that, in desperation due to the heat and lack of oxygen, the immigrants broke the trailer's box. The noise alerted the locals, who finally helped them.

The event is reminiscent of the recent tragedy in which 53 immigrants lost their lives in San Antonio, Texas.

Border Crisis

According to the latest report by the United Nations International Organization for Migration, the border between the United States and Mexico is the deadliest in the world. Edwin Viales, author of the report, notes that "the number of deaths on the U.S.-Mexico border last year is significantly higher than in any previous year, even before covid-19″. In 2021, 728 people died in transit crossing the border.
