Jordan Chiles appeals the loss of her medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
The gymnast appealed the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to take away her floor bronze to the Swiss Supreme Court.
Gymnast Jordan Chiles appealed to the Supreme Court of Switzerland the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to remove the bronze medal she won in the floor event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
"Jordan Chiles’ appeals present the international community with an easy legal question — will everyone stand by while an Olympic athlete who has done only the right thing is stripped of her medal because of fundamental unfairness in an ad-hoc arbitration process? The answer to that question should be no," Maurice Suh, the athlete's lawyer, wrote in a statement picked up by The Hill. "Every part of the Olympics, including the arbitration process, should stand for fair play."
CAS made the decision to take the medal away from Chiles and give it to Romanian gymnast Ana Bardosu on the grounds that the U.S. team requested a review of its athlete's score outside the regulation period, being specific, four seconds too late.
It was then that the CAS admitted an appeal filed by the Romanian team, giving it as valid and awarding the medal to Bardosu. Chiles again complained to the body and, seeing that, again, her request was ignored, the U.S. gymnast has decided to take the case to the Swiss Supreme Court.
Aside from Chiles' appeal, as soon as the news broke, the U.S. team announced that it would accompany the gymnast and appeal the decision. "We strongly believe that Jordan deserved the bronze medal," the body wrote in a statement.
Chiles' teammates such as Simone Biles showed their support for the gymnast.
