ICE has arrested 153 immigrants for sex crimes in Maryland in 2024

According to authorities, these offenders not only pose a threat to local communities, but, in many cases, had managed to evade justice for years. Many of them entered the country illegally, while others entered legally but violated immigration laws.

In an unprecedented operation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of 153 non-citizen sex offenders in the state of Maryland so far in 2024.

ICE, in its official release, highlighted the magnitude of the operation and the gravity of the crimes committed by those arrested. According to authorities, these criminals not only pose a threat to local communities, but in many cases had managed to evade justice for years. Many of them entered the country illegally, while others entered legally but violated immigration laws.

They could face deportation

The 153 individuals arrested now face a legal process that could culminate in their deportation. However, the process is not always immediate or straightforward. In many cases, detained individuals have the ability to appeal their deportation, and some could face lengthy legal battles before final decisions are made about their status. In the meantime, immigration agencies will continue to closely monitor each case.

According to the ICE statement, the process is as follows:

The three operational directorates of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement Operations, and Removal Operations, are the primary federal enforcement authority in charge of domestic law enforcement. ERO's mission is to protect the homeland through the arrest and deportation of those who undermine the safety of American communities and the integrity of U.S. immigration laws, and its primary areas of focus are interior enforcement operations, management of the agency's detained and non-detained populations, and repatriation of non-citizens who have received final orders of removal.

Detainees are critical public safety tools because they focus law enforcement resources on removable noncitizens who have been arrested for criminal activity. Detainers enhance the safety of all parties involved (ERO personnel, law enforcement officers, removable noncitizens, and the public) by allowing arrest in a secure and controlled custodial environment rather than at large within the community. Because arrestees result in the direct transfer of a noncitizen from state or local custody to ERO custody, they also minimize the likelihood that he or she will reoffend. In addition, detainers conserve scarce government resources by allowing ERO to directly detain delinquent noncitizens rather than expending resources to locate these individuals at large.
