The Detroit Police Department posted on its official X (formerly Twitter account) an announcement stating that as of February 1, 2024, gun owners who "live with a minor" will be required to store firearms "safely." They are requiring that guns be "unloaded and locked with a trigger locking mechanism or stored in a locked storage container."

Beginning February 13, 2024, any person who lives with a minor or those who know reasonably that a minor will come into their home must store their firearms safely. Guns must be loaded and locked with a trigger-locking mechanism or stored in a locked storage container.

The police also offer free gun locks at local police stations:

For the safety of children and everyone in the home, safely secure your guns. Get a FREE gun lock! Contact your local precinct to receive one today.

However, this order from the Detroit Police contradicts the Supreme Court's 2008 ruling that people cannot be forced to keep their firearms unloaded or locked.
