Roosevelt Island in New York woke up Tuesday to several explosions and shaking buildings that were also felt on the Upper East Side and in Astoria, Queens. The New York City Fire Department responded to the scene around 6 a.m.

Transformer possibly the cause of the explosions on Roosevelt Island

It all happened, FDNY explained to The Independent, around 5:54 a.m. At that time, firefighters received an emergency call at 580 Main Street reporting explosions and buildings shaking.

An hour later, authorities announced that they had resolved the issue, although they were unable to determine the cause. However, police informed The Independent that "a transformer is believed to have possibly caused the incident." In addition, authorities assured that no one was injured by the explosions and shaking, nor did there appear to be any buildings affected by electrical problems.

However, for safety reasons, the New York Police Department asked the Con Edison company to cut off the power supply to buildings located in the affected area. After ensuring that there was no risk, they passed the case to Con Edison, which is currently investigating the incident.
