Car accident leaves at least five dead in New York
No arrests have been made, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Team is investigating.
Authorities reported that an accident left at least five people dead in a crash between two vehicles on Cross Island Parkway in the borough of Queens in New York City early this morning, Jan. 1.
"Vehicle Collision: Northbound Cross Island Parkway closed at the Whitestone Bridge exit in Queens. Consider alt routes." the city's emergency notification system wrote on X (formerly Twitter) to report on the situation.
Likewise, authorities detailed that four people were presumed dead at the time the authorities arrived at the site. Later, they confirmed the death of another.
The New York Post, which consulted police department sources, explained that "a Mazda sedan was heading north on the expressway 'at a high rate of speed' when it rammed into a curb and overturned around 6 a.m., police sources said. Then, a man driving a Honda in the same direction slammed into the Mazda near Exit 36S."
"Four adults inside the Mazda were thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities and sources. Later, a fifth occupant was discovered and also declared dead, police said" the news outlet detailed.
Authorities are still investigating the accident: "No arrests have been made, and the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is probing the crash."
