Former Memphis police officer Desmond Mills Jr. pleads guilty to death of Tyre Nichols
As part of his agreement with the prosecutors, the former officer agreed to testify in the cases of the other four defendants.
One of five former Memphis, Tennessee, police officers charged in the death of Tyre Nichols in June pleaded guilty Thursday. Desmond Mills Jr. reached an agreement with the Prosecutor's Office, accepting the federal charges against him and agreeing to do so with the state charges as well.
In addition to admitting charges of use of excessive force and obstruction of justice, he pledged to cooperate with prosecutors in the cases of the other four defendants. They all pleaded not guilty, as Mills had done before reversing his decision this week. In exchange, the Prosecutor's Office asked that the 33-year-old former officer serve 15 years in prison.
