Group D: Australia pulls off surprise to join France in round of 16
The Australian team defeated Denmark and qualifies. The Gauls advance as group winners despite losing to Tunisia.
Australia qualified as the Group D runner-up to enter the round of 16 at the Qatar World Cup after beating Denmark 1-0. The Socceroos will be in this round for just the second time in their history.
The only goal of the match came in the 60th minute after a perfect counter-attack by the Australian team, which was finished by midfielder Mathew Leckie.
Denmark started more energetically than their opponents, but the Australians gradually took control of the match. The feeling among the Danes is one of deep disappointment, as they were the arguable favourites to qualify alongside France.
France loses but keeps first place
The French national team, which qualified for the round of 16 before the match began, lost to Tunisia 1-0. Despite their defeat, they managed to maintain first place in their group.
Wahbi Khazri scored the only goal of the match - and of his team in the entire World Cup - in the 58th minute after a fine individual move that he finished with his left foot. In the last minute of the match, the referee disallowed a goal by Antoine Griezmann for offside.
With these latest results, Group D ends as follows: France (6 points), Australia (6), Tunisia (4) and Denmark (1).
