U.S. fails to get reward of victory despite outplaying England
The USMNT must beat Iran to qualify, and England also controls its own fate to advance to the round of 16.
The United States and England played to a 0-0 draw in a match in which the American team was clearly superior. In a dominant first half, the young team coached by Gregg Berhalter failed to put away any of the great chances they had in the first 45 minutes.
England opened the match more active than their opponents. Harry Kane had the first big chance of the game with a shot that U.S. goalie Matt Turner blocked out for a corner. But that energy was extinguished before the first quarter of an hour. The United States began to take control and create threatening chances. Haji Wright had the first big opportunity for the U.S. with a header that went just wide of the goal.
England were mostly unable to get out of their own half, and the USMNT began to lay siege to the goal defended by Jordan Pickford. Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah both created significant early chances. In the 33rd minute, Christian Pulisic had the best chance of the match, hitting the post with a powerful left-footed shot. A few minutes later, he put the England defense in trouble again with a header off a cross from Sergiño Dest. Pulisic was undoubtedly the man of the match along with England defender Harry Maguire.
The second half was different. The pace of the game slowed down and there were fewer chances. The players' fatigue was noticeable due to the pronounced effort in the first 45 minutes.
With this result, the United States must beat Iran next Tuesday to advance in the World Cup. England also control their own fate to advance to the round of 16.
