The U.S. government announced on Thursday a new package of economic sanctions coordinated against the communist regime in Havana, aimed at dismantling the opaque financial networks, oil logistics and military technology suppliers that keep the regime in power.

The measure, formally announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio pursuant to Executive Order 14404 issued by President Donald Trump, seeks to stifle the illicit revenue that the ruling elite accumulates while the Cuban people face a severe economic collapse and massive power outages.

The sanctions target ten strategic targets and five vessels identified as blocked property. Among those sanctioned are Guillermo Faustino Rodríguez López-Calleja, linked to the network of tankers transporting crude oil to the island, and Any Rodríguez Lastres, daughter of the former president of the military conglomerate GAESA, Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera.

Likewise, the Treasury Department extended the scope of the sanctions to any foreign entity operating in the technology, manufacturing, maritime and electronics sectors linked to the island's state apparatus.

Washington's crackdown also targets state-owned import companies, technical assistance services and suppliers based in China that supply equipment to the armed forces of the tyranny. According to the State Department, these actions aim to neutralize Havana's alliance with hostile global actors who use Cuban territory as a platform to threaten U.S. national security.

"The Trump administration will not stand idly by while the Cuban regime channels the island's resources to its military elite, while regime insiders and their families benefit from opaque offshore networks, and while Cuba continues to serve as a launching pad for a global coalition of hostile, anti-American actors," Rubio emphasized.

Escalating repression in Havana and diplomatic condemnation

The announcement of the economic measures coincided with a new crackdown by state security agencies within the island. The prominent independent journalist Yoani Sánchez, editor-in-chief of the online publication 14ymedio and winner of the Ortega y Gasset Prize, was arbitrarily arrested this Thursday by the political police as she was leaving her home in the Nuevo Vedado neighborhood of Havana.

Sanchez's arrest comes after the arrests of reporters Camila Acosta and Adelth Bonne Gamboa, which took place throughout the week in public spaces. In light of this situation, the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Juan Pablo Segura, condemned the actions of the Cuban government apparatus.

"The arrest of Cuban journalist Yoani Sánchez this morning is part of the Cuban regime's ongoing campaign to crush the independent press," the official stated on social media, noting that the use of arbitrary detentions is an act of "cowardice" of the regime's leadership in the face of the flow of uncensored information.
