China and the United States will open a 'communication channel' on AI following the summit

China and the United States agreed to establish a "communication channel" for incidents related to artificial intelligence, according to both sides, following a summit in Washington that yielded no major breakthroughs.

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping addressed issues ranging from artificial intelligence and trade to the stalemate in Iran, and confirmed that they would meet for the third and fourth times this year at international summits in China and the United States.

Xi's visit to Washington was marked more by pomp than by substance, but the White House announced on Friday that both nations agreed to establish a "bilateral communication channel" for incidents related to AI.

Chinese state media confirmed the agreement on the artificial intelligence hotline in a report on the summit's outcomes published this Saturday.

While billionaire Trump has repeatedly dismissed fears that AI could pose a threat to humanity, Xi struck a more moderate tone, noting that the technology must be developed under human control.

The White House also reported on several agreements reached during the visit, including China's commitment to import at least 10 million metric tons of coal from the United States in 2027 and 2028.

In addition, both countries agreed to more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion worth of "non-sensitive goods" in each direction, and two Chinese pandas would be sent to a U.S. zoo.

Despite the emphasis on pomp and ceremony during the visit, the message from both the U.S. and China was that the summit had helped ease tensions between the rival superpowers on a range of issues.

Trump stated that the meeting was "one of friendship, strength and success, both for China and for the United States."
