President Donald Trump addressed recent statements by Florida Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar, who questioned the intensity of some Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
In a measured tone, the president combined a defense of his public safety agenda with a gesture of understanding toward the Hispanic lawmaker's perspective.
The statement comes after Salazar released a campaign ad in which she noted that certain border control measures "have gone too far,” while also calling for dignified treatment of workers with no criminal records.

"I understand what she's saying, but I feel very strongly about this… I won because of my border," Trump said when asked about the congresswoman's stance.
Political support and recognition of local leadership
In his remarks, Trump also referred to his political ties with Salazar, noting that his endorsement was a key factor in the lawmaker's victory in Florida's 27th district.
The president highlighted the value of her local leadership and put the differences in opinion into context within the broader scope of his movement.
"She's a nice person. I got her elected," the former president noted, recalling the course of the past legislative races. "María won only because of me. So she got a little bit softer than the border; I understand that. I understand that, but I just don't happen to be there," he added in a conciliatory tone.
Institutional coordination on the rule of law
Meanwhile, an official spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reiterated to Fox News the agencies' commitment to enforcing federal laws passed by Congress, emphasizing that ICE's efforts are focused on maintaining the rule of law and order in communities.
Trump's stance reflects a pragmatic balance within the conservative spectrum, allowing him to reconcile strict enforcement of border laws with a willingness to listen to the concerns of representatives who advocate for their local communities.
