Christian Ziegler leaves his position as head of the Florida GOP
The Republican has been facing accusations of sexual assault for a week. Politico reported his resignation after a private party meeting.
The chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, Christian Ziegler, has left his position at the head of the political party in the state due to the accusations of sexual assault. According to Politico, the decision was made this Monday after a closed-door party meeting.
According to two people who attended said meeting, an emergency vote by the Republican Party of Florida led to Ziegler’s resignation. According to CNN, Ziegler was not present at the meeting, and no one voted to keep him in his position.
Christian Ziegler has so far denied that his relationship with the plaintiff was violent or non-consensual. He was supported by his wife, Bridget Ziegler, who is co-founder of the conservative group Moms for Liberty. Bridget Ziegler and her husband assured that the sexual encounter they had with another woman was a consensual threesome in which she also participated.
Evan Power named next chairman
Florida Republican Party Vice Chairman Evan Power appears to be Ziegler's replacement. Power has assumed the reins of the party since Dec. 19, per Politico, and has already announced that he would soon run to lead the party on a non-interim basis.
