Florida Governor Ron DeSantis lashed out at his main primary challenger, Donald Trump, just after he was asked if he would support the former president should he become the Republican nominee for the presidential election.

DeSantis was asked by a reporter Thursday if he would endorse Trump should he win the primary, and while the governor did not directly answer the question, he did take the opportunity to talk about his opponent.

The governor began by referring directly to Trump’s criticism of how DeSantis handled the Covid-19 pandemic in Florida. “What I would say is this: When you are saying that [former New York Gov. Andrew] Cuomo did better on COVID than Florida did, you are revealing yourself to just be full of it,” he said.

DeSantis opined that no one really believes that Andrew Cuomo has handled the pandemic better than he has. “And you know why I know that? Because I remember in 2020 and 2021 when he was praising Florida for being open, saying we did it much better than New York and Michigan, and everyone was coming to Florida, and that we were one of the great governors in the United States,” he added.

During his remarks, the governor commented that if Donald Trump had to make that argument against him it is because “he probably doesn’t have very good arguments.”

“I don’t think people are going to buy it,” he opined.

DeSantis criticizes Trump’s reform

The governor also recently criticized Trump’s judicial reform dubbed the First Step Act, asserting that that bill “has allowed dangerous people [back on the streets] who have reoffended and really, really hurt a number of people.”

Polls pick Trump

Despite the criticism of both candidates, voters have their own opinion. In a recent conservative poll, it was clear that Americans continue to prefer the former president over the Florida governor. However, the difference between the two is not unsurmountable and could change at any time. According to the poll, 40.3% of conservatives prefer Trump to DeSantis, who got 25.8% of the vote.
