The oldest craft brewery in the United States, Anchor Brewing, announced that it will cease operations. The company, based in San Francisco and founded 127 years ago, has been forced to close its production due to "a combination of challenging economic factors and declining sales since 2016," it explained in a statement picked up by CNN.

Sam Singer, spokesman for the brewery, said:

This was an extremely difficult decision that Anchor reached only after many months of careful evaluation. The impacts of the pandemic, inflation, especially in San Francisco, and a highly competitive market left the company with no option but to make this sad decision to cease operations.

With the closure of the company, 61 people will be out of work, although they were assured that they will receive "transition support and separation packages." In June, Anchor Brewing stopped selling in the rest of the country and limited its distribution to California only, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
