Joel Martinez, who was named deputy chief of the Border Patrol in January, was suspended from the position this week. This was confirmed by three sources to The Washington Post.
"Martinez, a native of San Benito, Tex., was chief of the Laredo, Tex., sector before his most recent promotion. He previously held leadership positions in the agency’s Rio Grande Valley and Big Bend sectors," detailed The Washington Post.
According to the report, the decision to suspend Martinez was made due to alleged misconduct. Erin Waters, CBP spokeswoman, explained that the agency will tolerate improper behavior.
"When we discover any alleged or potential misconduct, we immediately refer it for investigation and cooperate fully with any criminal or administrative investigations," Waters said in a statement reported by The Washington Post.
