The Biden administration is reportedly seeking congressional approval to provide housing for illegal immigrants. The plan, as revealed by Axios, would benefit families who crossed the southern border illegally by providing them with housing and greater freedom of movement.
The initiative is part of a $40 billion supplemental funding package that was passed in June. It also includes assistance for Ukraine and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials told the media that the immigrants will be able to come and go as they please but they would be required to check in and stay the night on campus.
Members of the agency claimed that it will help reduce the population in shelters near the border and help keep track of immigrants while they're being processed, which could be completed in three weeks.
In addition to weighing these reasons, lawmakers are being asked to consider another DHS request, which involves outsourcing the management of these shelters to for-profit contractors or non-governmental organizations.
