Former President Donald Trump's legal team asked the Washington DC Circuit Court of Appeals on Saturday to dismiss the federal case against him for alleged interference in the 2020 election, citing presidential immunity. That is, his actions were protected because he held the position of president at the time.
The day prior, the Supreme Court ruled against special counsel Jack Smith's request to settle the immunity issue. The court refused to take the case into its own hands, skipping a federal appeals court. Smith maintained that he wanted to resolve the argument of presidential immunity as quickly as possible.
The recent SCOTUS ruling enabled Trump's lawyers to make the request at the end of last week.
