State Department confirms U.S. citizen killed in Sudan fighting

Several residential areas in the country's capital were hit by heavy shelling and gunfire since the start of hostilities a week ago.

In the midst of fighting in Sudan, a U.S. citizen lost his life. The State Department confirmed this to Fox News Channel on Thursday. The State Department added that it is in contact with the family of the deceased, but gave no further details about his identity or the circumstances under which he may have lost his life.

The U.S. Embassy in Sudan is preparing to reinforce its security personnel. A detachment of troops plans to increase its military presence in Djibouti, a country close to Sudan, in order to facilitate an evacuation of U.S. personnel from the country, if necessary.

According to the State Department, the American embassy in Sudan is monitoring the security situation to prepare in advance. Last Wednesday, the embassy repeated its warnings to U.S. citizens living in the country, advising them not to leave their homes.

On the occasion of the end of the month of Ramadan, the parties involved in the fighting promised each other a ceasefire for at least 72 hours. Sudan has been in turmoil since 2021, when a military coup put an end to the process of democratic normalization. Since then, a military junta headed by General Abdelfatah Al Burhan has been in power. Last week, the military junta's number two, Mohamed "Hemeti" Hamdan Dagalo, launched attacks against al Burhan's forces.
