Mayra Flores announces her candidacy to return to the House of Representatives in 2024

The Republican, who made history in 2022 as the first Mexican-born woman to hold a seat in the House, said she is running to "help restore the American Dream."

Former Texas Congresswoman Mayra Flores filed her candidacy to return to the House of Representatives in 2024 after losing her seat to Democrat Vicente Gonzalez in the last election.

The Republican made the announcement by posting a video on her Twitter account where she stated that she is running in order to "help restore the American Dream, secure our borders and stand firm on our values of God, Family and Country."

I am excited to announce that I am officially in the race for Congress in #TX34. We made history last year, but there is still work to be done here in South Texas. I am running to help restore the American Dream, secure our borders and hold fast to our values of God, Family and Country.

In 2022, Flores made history by becoming the first woman born in Mexico (Tamaulipas) to win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her victory in the predomonately Hispanic 34th District in Texas put progressive delegates on alert.

Despite her overwhelming victory - the district had not elected a Republican representative since 1870 - she was later defeated - by nine percentage points - in the 2022 midterms. On that occasion, Democratic candidate Vicente Gonzalez came out the winner.

Support from Republican leaders

Several House Republican leaders endorsed Flores' candidacy before it became official. As Breitbart exclusively reports, some of the more notable ones were: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who stated:

Mayra Flores made history in 2022 when she became the first Mexican-born woman elected to the U.S. Congress. I witnessed firsthand how she hit the ground running when she was elected, serving the people of South Texas with dedication and integrity as a valued member of the House Republican Conference. I am delighted that Mayra is running again for this position and I am proud to fully endorse her candidacy.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise described Flores as a "legal immigrant, border patrol wife and mother" and assured that she "understands what it's like to live the American Dream."

We need Mayra Flores' leadership back in Congress. Mayra, a legal immigrant, border patrol spouse and mother, understands what it is like to live the American Dream and is committed to advocating for policies that promote opportunity for all Americans. I look forward to serving alongside Mayra once again and am committed to fully supporting her campaign.

House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik was another Republican who endorsed Mayra's nomination and noted that she would support her "every step of the way."

Mayra Flores is a rock-solid conservative and an inspiration to all Americans who will put America first and fight every day for border security, constitutional rights, economic opportunity and educational freedom. I am so excited that Mayra is running to change this district and help lead our fight to Save America. I will be with her every step of the way.
