Major Mexican company ends U.S. operations, cuts nearly 400 jobs in Texas

Interceramic, a tile manufacturing company, will permanently close its corporate office, factory, and showrooms throughout the state.

Interceramic, one of the most important tile manufacturers in North America, announced that it will shut down its U.S. operations this year. This decision will result in nearly 400 job cuts across Texas.

The company, which is headquartered in Chihuahua (Mexico) announced to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) that it will be closing its corporate office in Carrollton, its manufacturing facility in Garland, and its showrooms in Austin, Fort Worth, Houston, Spring, Plano, and San Antonio.

Nearly 400 people will be out of work from several locations: 161 workers have already been laid off from its Garland facility, 118 from its corporate office and its Carrollton distribution center. Nearly 100 employees have been let go from the showrooms.

The company did not respond to questions from The Dallas Morning News about the reasons that led it to end operations in the country. The mass layoff notices filed with TWC also failed to provide detailed reasons.

Interceramics reported a drop in its sales

The company reported strong sales in Mexico. However, internationally, its latest quarterly financial reports for 2022 showed a drop in sales of $35 million.

In 2016, the company moved its US headquarters from Garland to Carrollton. Humberto Maese, who was the president of the company's operations in the country at that time, said the move was seen as a testament to the company's future in the nation.

Interceramics is one of many Mexican companies that established their U.S. headquarters in Dallas-Fort Worth. About 127 other companies were doing business in Texas as of May 2019, according to the Texas-Mexico Mission Foods Center at Southern Methodist University.
