Instrumentalization of Brazilian Justice: how Lula da Silva's Government persecutes the opposition

Javier Bonilla, a renowned Brazilian political expert, graced the microphones at Voz Media.

Brazil is experiencing changes in the months leading up to its next district election. Last week, the Brazilian Justice ordered the withdrawal of former President Jair Bolsonaro's passport and opened an investigation against the conservative and a dozen of his collaborators, whom they accuse of preparing a kind of coup d'état during the 2022 elections that he lost to Lula da Silva.

To dig deeper into this situation, the Voz Media team interviewed expert analyst on Brazilian politics Javier Bonilla, who was able to shed some light on the persecution of the opposition to Lula da Silva's Government. The federal police acted under orders from Alexandre de Moraes to launch the "Tempus Veritatis" operation and impose precautionary measures against Bolsonaro and his entourage, without having sufficient evidence, according to Javier Bonilla and Karina Mariani.

According to Javier Bonilla, a process similar to that of Venezuela is being prepared in Brazil, through which Lula da Silva's Government becomes increasingly authoritarian. The elevation of the former Minister of Security and Justice Flavio Dino to the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil stands out as an important date in this process. "A renowned communist and member of a Brazilian Maoist party," before moving to the socialist party. "The thing no longer has any modesty."

From a media point of view, things would also become increasingly tense in Brazil. According to Bonilla, several companies dedicated to communication on social networks have left the country after the latest government initiatives to control and censor social networks. Added to this is a climate in the traditional media, which Bonilla describes as fervent opponents of Jair Bolsonaro, who were quick to associate him with political murders in which he was not involved, as Justice was later able to clarify.

Together with Karina Mariani, Voz Media journalist Orlando Avendaño conducts this interview that can be heard in full via X.
