France: a pupil fatally stabs a school assistant

(AFP) A student stabbed an educational assistant to death Tuesday in France, where authorities tightened controls at schools to seize bladed weapons after a series of deadly youth fights.
In late April, following a deadly attack in the western city of Nantes, authorities reported that they conducted 958 random checks at educational centers and seized 94 bladed weapons since March.
The latest tragedy occurred Tuesday during a backpack check carried out by French gendarmerie in Nogent, in eastern France, authorities said.
The student attacked the 31-year-old woman with a knife, who was unable to overcome her injuries and died, a source close to the case told AFP.
"A terrible drama struck this morning a secondary school in Nogent. I express all my support to the victim and her loved ones," Education Minister Elisabeth Borne wrote on social network X.
The attacker is in police custody and the 324 students of the center where the events occurred were confined, the local prefecture explained.
France launched school controls after a 17-year-old was killed during a fight at a high school in the Paris region in March. Another 15-year-old teenager was stabbed to death in late April in Nantes.
