Nepali Police raised the death toll this Saturday to 157 after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that has left more than 180 injured so far. The earthquake especially affected the regions of Jajarkot, where the epicenter was recorded, and Western Rukum. These are two remote regions of the Himalayan country whose mountainous nature and difficult road access are complicating rescue efforts.

Army spokesman Krishna Prasad Bhandari put the number of wounded at at least 185 in statements to the EFE news agency. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) lowered the magnitude of the earthquake to 5.6 in the last few hours.

In any case, it is so far the deadliest earthquake recorded in Nepal since 2015, when almost 9,000 people died. Then, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Kathmandu, toppling dozens of multi-story buildings.
