Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) asked Hispanics not to support DeSantis during his run for the presidential election. During his his "mañanera" (morning briefing), the president of Mexico sent the following message to the governor of Florida, wishing the following:

I take this opportunity to tell Mr. DeSantis that yesterday he unveiled, you can see that I did not lie, that all his politicking about immigrants is because he wants to be the candidate of the Republican Party, and yesterday he unveiled and wants to impose the same thing he applied in Florida: a restrictive immigration policy. I hope that Hispanics in Florida wake up and do not give him their vote, do not vote for those who persecute migrants, those who do not respect migrants, because migrants, as it says in the Bible, deserve respect.

Immigration policy, the main issue between AMLO and DeSantis

The main reason for asking Latino citizens not to support DeSantis during the race to become president of the United States in 2024 is his immigration policy. During the Florida governor's official announcement of his candidacy on Twitter, he said that one of his first actions as president would be to build a barrier between Mexico and the United States: "Biden opened the southern border and allowed massive amounts of drugs to enter the country. We will close the border, build a border wall and hold the drug cartels accountable."

AMLO does not agree with these sentiments, as he assures that drugs, especially fentanyl, are entering through Ron DeSantis' own state: Florida.

[DeSantis] also brought up the same thing, the fentanyl thing, thinking that he is going to get votes with that. Let them start to see, because at some point fentanyl is arriving through Florida and we have to be informing people so that they do not offend Mexico, so that they learn to respect us.
