At least 18 people were killed following an armed attack in San Miguel Totolapan in the state of Guerrero. Among the victims was the local mayor, Conrado Mendoza Almeda. According to local media, the massacre was perpetrated by a criminal gang known as the "Tequileros" from the state of Jalisco. The gang is known for the cultivation and trafficking of opium, as well as kidnapping and extortion, and has been accused of orchestrating numerous murders and disappearances in the region.

Investigations begin

The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, condemned the attack on social media and assured that she has ordered to intensify the investigation and clarify the facts.

For more than 20 years, Guerrero, on the Pacific coast, has been affected by violence caused by rival gangs seeking to control the drug trade. Mexico has registered more than 340,000 murders since 2006, most of which are attributed to criminal organizations.
