NBA: 2024 All-Star Game returns to its original format
After changing the game to a schoolyard pick format for six seasons, the game will again be played between the traditional Eastern Conference and Western Conference teams.
The NBA All-Star Game will return to its original format six seasons after it was changed. This season's edition, the 73rd All-Star Game, will be played on Feb. 18, 2024, at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The scoring system and the duration of the game will be different from the prior game. The classic duel between the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference without an All-Star draft also returns.
"This year's theme is 'get back to basketball,'" NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a media appearance. "We are going to return to the classic format of the All-Star Game," he added, to the applause of those present.
This season, the exhibition will maintain three quarters each 12-minutes long. The change compared to the previous edition is in the last quarter, as noted by the NBA in a statement. The last quarter will be a normal quarter, and the team that scores the most points will win, as opposed to the experimental "Elam ending," which began in 2020.
The rosters will be voted in the same manner. The Western Conference and Eastern Conference will each have 12 players selected by the traditional voting system. The schoolyard-pick-style All-Star draft is eliminated.
The game will also keep score of which team wins each quarter, as a cash prize will be awarded to a charity of the winning team's choice.
The two players from each conference who get the most votes will be named captains.
