Dutch determination eliminates United States
The USMNT's World Cup adventure came to an end after losing 3-1 to the Netherlands in the round of 16.
The Netherlands became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals after defeating the United States 3-1. The USMNT dominated the game for most of the 90 minutes but the Dutch team was determined to win.
The US team had their first big chance two minutes into the match. Noopert saved a shot from Pulisic after a great pass from Robinson left him in front of the goal.
The United States clearly dominated the first half, but barely took any chances against the Dutch team's tactically sound positioning. The first goal came in the 10th minute. Memphis Depay (1-0) took a low cross from Denzel Dumfries and put the Netherlands ahead.
The second goal came a minute before the referee blew the whistle for the end of the first half. Denzel Dumfries, who was the best player of the match, crossed into the box setting up Daley Blind (2-0) to send the ball into the back of the net. This goal was very similar to the first.
After the start of the second half, the United States came out with more drive. They started to take chances until the 76th minute Haji Wright (2-1), who had only been on the field for a few seconds, scored after a cross from Christian Pulisic.
The Americans' hopes were dashed just five minutes later. Denzel Dumfries (3-1) scored with a great left-footed pass from Daley Blind's cross.
With this defeat, the U.S. team says goodbye to the World Cup with pride, after a great group stage and without losing any of the three games they played. The young team coached by Gregg Berhalter left a very good impression on this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
The Netherlands will go up against the winner of the match between Argentina and Australia in the quarterfinals.
