Donald Trump announced this Friday that Russia will supply diesel to the United States and the global market, following a "very successful" conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. As he wrote on Truth Social, Moscow will ship more than 300,000 metric tons "immediately," another 500,000 metric tons in November and 1 million metric tons "immediately afterward."

Unlike gasoline, which is used primarily for cars and other personal vehicles, diesel is essential for freight transportation and activities such as agriculture, livestock farming and construction. Trucks, tractors, buses and much of the heavy machinery run on this fuel.

The announcement comes as the price of diesel stands at a national average of $6.27 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The agreement between Trump and Putin

According to a post by Trump, he spoke with Vladimir Putin, and the two agreed that Russia will deliver another 3 million metric tons of diesel "shortly." The post does not specify how much of that fuel would go to the U.S. or whether that figure is in addition to previous shipments.

In addition, the president predicted that the agreement will lower fuel prices: "Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!"

"Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority. This is a very big and important announcement," he added.

Along with the announcement, the Treasury Department reported that it will temporarily allow the purchase and sale of Russian diesel. Until now, U.S. sanctions against Russia prohibited companies and banks from doing business with that fuel. Under the new authorization, which the Treasury announced on X, companies will be able to purchase, transport and import it through April 7, 2027. The authorization is limited to diesel and does not lift the rest of the sanctions against Moscow.
