Second New Jersey Republican councilman murdered in seven days
Russell Heller of Milford, N.J. was found shot dead in his car. Hours later, police found the main suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Following the murder of Republican City Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour of Sayreville, N.J. a week ago, another city legislator was murdered this Wednesday. The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office reported that Russell Heller, a Milford, N.J. town councilman, was found dead with a gunshot wound. Investigations indicate that the main suspect in the crime committed suicide hours later.
According to the prosecutor, Heller, also a Republican, was inside his car at the PSE&G Somerset Central Division public company headquarters. Around 7 a.m., former PSE&G employee Gary Curtis shot him, killing him on the spot.
After finding Heller's body, county police issued a search warrant for Curtis, who was found at about 10:20 p.m. dead inside his vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office determined that Heller's murder was premeditated: "Preliminary investigation has revealed that the shooting was an isolated incident and Mr. Heller was the intended target."
