Most Americans blame Biden for border crisis
More than 50% of respondents believe the president is responsible for the number of illegal immigrant encounters at the border reaching record highs.
This Friday, Yahoo/YouGov released a poll revealing that a majority of Americans believe Joe Biden is to blame for the continued rise in illegal immigration at the southern border.
According to the data collected, 54% of Americans over 18 believe the president is "very" or "somewhat" responsible for the border crisis. Only 33% of those surveyed thought that the president is not at fault.
Over 5,5 million aliens in two years
In fiscal years 2021 and 2022, it is estimated that approximately 5.5 million people crossed the southern border illegally. According to a new report from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), December 2022 set a new monthly record for migrant encounters.
The report indicates that there were more than 250,000 apprehensions in the border area in December, surpassing the previous high of 241,136 from May 2022. This is despite the fact that summer is typically the peak time for illegal immigration.
Impeachment of Mayorkas?
The crisis at the border is so alarming that an initiative has emerged to subject Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to impeachment proceedings.
Mayorkas’ handling of the border situation may even result in the Border Patrol’s involvement in a potential impeachment process.
According to a senior Border Patrol union official, the agency could agree to support the secretary’s dismissal if it means steps towards resolving the crisis. "Agents can help with [processing]. But they need to also be out there to be able to deal with the patrolling the border piece of it, the part that's in our job title, Border Patrol agent. We're supposed to be out there patrolling the border," he said.
