Rising prices are ruining Thanksgiving. This year's holiday 'is the most expensive in history' and many families have already had to make changes to the typical menu on their table.

This is disproportionately affecting young people, about 33% of Gen Z members who celebrate 'Friendsgiving' will be having pizza for dinner this year instead of "an expensive turkey." Only 24% said they would serve the traditional dish, according to a Personal Capital survey. Also, those of younger age suffer the greatest distress related to tonight's meal. Fifty-four percent of Gen Z respondents and 51 percent of millennial respondents say they are stressed about covering the costs of the celebration.

The most expensive Thanksgiving in history

Grocery prices have soared 12.4% in October alone. The biggest increase in cost comes from the turkey - considered the centerpiece of the dinner - which sells for almost $1.81 per pound. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed that the average price of frozen turkeys has increased approximately 73% since last year.

In 2021, Americans paid an average of $53.31 to celebrate the holiday. But now the meal - all sides included - will cost up to an estimated 64.05, according to the latest American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) survey.

One in 5 Americans said they feared they would not be able to cover the cost of the dinner, while 88% of respondents said they would eliminate at least one dish from the meal. On the other hand, 1 in 4 plan not to celebrate the day in an effort to save money. Additionally, more than a third said they will plan smaller dinners and invite fewer people.

Most Americans placed their Thanksgiving budget between $100 and $200, this included all generations.
