Argentina defeats Mexico with two great goals by Messi and Enzo Fernandez

In order to qualify for the round of 16, 'El Tri' will need to defeat Saudi Arabia and hope for a 'La Albiceleste' loss against Poland.

Argentina defeated Mexico 2-0 in the second match day of Group C. "La Albiceleste" needed a result to keep their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 alive, and they did just that. "El Tri" will have to beat Saudi Arabia in their final match of the group stage and hope that Poland defeats Argentina in order to advance.

The first half was weak from both sides, as neither generated many chances. Those that did occur did not pose much of a threat. The highlight of the first 45 minutes was Mexico's defense. The Mexican players were well disciplined and did not allow Argentina to penetrate into dangerous positions. Captain Andrés Guardado went off injured just minutes before the referee signaled halftime.

The beginning of the second half seemed like an extension of the first. Both teams failed to generate chances until Leo Messi appeared. The Argentine star scored a great goal from outside the box with his golden left foot in the 63rd minute, ( 1-0) unstoppable for Memo Ochoa.

With four minutes remaining in the game, Enzo Fernández put a beautiful shot out of Ochoa's reach from a corner kick to make it 2-0.

With this result, the fate of all four teams in Group C will be decided in the final match of the group stage Wednesday. Poland is currently in first place with four points, followed by Argentina and Saudi Arabia with three points each and Mexico with one point.
