School shooting leaves at least nine dead in Belgrade, Serbia

A 14-year-old boy opened fire at the educational center against teachers and students in the European city.

A 14-year-old boy opened fire at an elementary school in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. Nine people died as a result of the attack, eight of whom were minors. The ninth deceased was a member of the center's security staff. According to Serbian local media, seven others were injured: six students and one teacher. The shooter was arrested by authorities at the scene.

According to the Serbian Interior Ministry, the shooter came to the Vladislav Ribnikar School with a firearm on Wednesday. He opened fire on several people present on the premises. Serbian Police showed up at the scene and managed to apprehend the attacker when he apparently ran out of ammunition. According to Serbian media reports, the firearm used belonged to the shooter's father.

The injured were taken to medical centers. Four of them were reported to be in serious condition. Serbian authorities have not yet clarified the motive behind this deadly attack. School shootings are not common in Serbia, where laws prohibit the carrying of weapons, similar to the rest of Europe. However, many illegal weapons are circulating in the country, which in the 1990s was shaken by a bitter civil war.
