In the 2020 presidential elections, Joe Biden rebuilt the famous “Blue wall” to defeat Donald Trump. The wall passes through Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, three states that Trump won in the previous election. Now, less than ten months away from seeking a second term, Biden is in trouble in Michigan.
In November 2016, Michigan witnessed a victory for Trump against Hillary Clinton by a narrow margin of 0.23 percentage points, thus defying almost all polls at the time that placed the Democrat as the sure winner of the 16 electoral votes of the state.
Four years later, Biden managed to reverse the result and won Michigan by 2.78 points thanks to unionized households and the high participation of minorities. However, on the eve of his re-election attempt, his popularity is lacking.
“The problem is not policy. The problem is the man.”
This is what Democratic strategist Adrian Hemond confessed to The Wall Street Journal, admittingly concerned about the president’s chances of winning again in Michigan.
Even Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) confessed to speaking to Biden about it. He recommended visiting the state because it is currently “not where it should be” regarding electoral events.
In turn, one of the points that helps Biden the most with the independents will harm him in the Wolverine State: his support for Israel in the war with Hamas. While the president has gone from high to low on this issue, Dearborn County has the largest community of Arab Americans in the United States.
“It’s costing him here in Michigan. I wish he would see that he’s leaving a huge demographic behind,” David Haener, a Democrat from New Boston, told the aforementioned media.
The statements are translated into the latest published polls, showing Donald Trump winning in most of them. One of the latest, published by Redfield & Wilton, ranked the Republican two points above Biden.
