California: Mexican man who had been deported three times arrested on charges of ramming ICE agents

The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) team arrested Jesús Israel García-Cobarruvias, a Mexican citizen who had been deported from the U.S. three times and who is accused of using a vehicle to attack agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in California.

The arrest took place on Aug. 31 in Martinez, Calif., during an ICE operation, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported on Friday.

According to federal authorities, García-Cobarruvias allegedly drove his vehicle toward the agents during the operation, injuring one of them and damaging an official vehicle. DHS states that the agent's injuries are so severe that he is currently unable to walk without assistance.

He had been deported three times

DHS identified the detainee as an undocumented immigrant who had previously been removed from the country on three occasions. The information released so far does not specify the dates of those deportations or when he re-entered the United States.

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin stated that the department will not tolerate attacks against federal agents and assured that authorities will prosecute those who participate in assaults against officials responsible for enforcing immigration laws.

The case comes as the Trump administration continues a broad campaign of detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants, with a stated emphasis on individuals with criminal records and foreign nationals who have re-entered the country after being deported.

No details have yet been released regarding the specific charges facing García-Cobarruvias.
