Cruz at CPAC: "We need to speak to young people, Hispanics and mothers".
The Republican senator says conservatives need to go beyond parochialism to explain "the blessings of liberty."
The most important meeting of conservatism, which opened this Friday with Sarah Palin, included the expected participation of Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas). Senator Cruz made an assessment of the Conservatives' communication strategy.
Beyond the choir
At one point in the speech, he said, "as Republicans, we spend too much time preaching to the choir. We spend too much time talking to the same 2.6 million people watching Fox News. And God loves the choir. The choir needs preaching to. But we also need to be talking to young people with Hispanic, African American and suburban moms about the blessings of liberty."
The black vote overwhelmingly favors the Democratic Party. In the last presidential elections, this trend has continued, with 92% voting for the Democratic Party, compared to 8% who opted for the Republican Party according to the Pew Research Center.
It's different for the Hispanic vote, which is showing increasing independence from the Democratic Party. Moreover, according to the same source, the Hispanic vote for Trump in 2020 was higher than in 2016. Joe Biden took 56% of the suburban vote, and 55% of the women's vote.
A pronoun for Ted Cruz
The senator also entertained the audience with several jokes. He said the economic crisis is so hard "that Antifa cannot afford bricks" to throw. Moreover, the crisis is such that "AOC can't afford handcuffs," he said in reference to the depiction of Alexia Ocasio-Cortez pretending to be handcuffed at a rally.
He also made reference to the fact that in some schools, children are asked to say their name and add the pronouns by which they want others to refer to them. Cruz said what his would be: "kiss my a...".
