eBay announces the layoff of 1,000 workers

The company reported that it will lay off 9% of its staff. In addition, it assured that they "plan to scale back the number of contracts we have within our alternate workforce over the coming months."

eBay announced this Tuesday the layoff of nearly 1,000 workers. The company reported that it will lay off 9% of its workforce. In addition, the multinational assured that they "plan to scale back the number of contracts we have within our alternate workforce over the coming months." This was stated on the corporate blog by the company's CEO, Jamie Iannone:

The most significant and toughest of these decisions is to reduce our current workforce by approximately 1,000 roles or an estimated 9% of full-time employees. Additionally, we plan to scale back the number of contracts we have within our alternate workforce over the coming months. These are not actions we take lightly — and we recognize the impact they will have on all eBayers. We have to say goodbye to people who have made so many important contributions to the eBay community and culture, and this isn’t easy.

eBay requests teleworking to notify employees of layoffs

As reported by Iannone, they will contact the people affected by this measure via Zoom this Wednesday to notify them of the termination of their contract. For this reason, the company's board of directors asked all workers at the different headquarters located in the United States to work from home so as to "provide some space and privacy for these conversations":

Leaders will communicate the news directly via Zoom, and your VP or eLT member will send an email once the notifications in their group have been completed. We request that all U.S. employees work from home on January 24th to provide some space and privacy for these conversations. We’re committed to treating everyone with respect and empathy through this transition and providing impacted employees with support and resources.

The decision comes in the midst of the crisis that technology companies are experiencing and which has caused, so far this year alone, layoffs.fyi points out, a total of 13,242 people to have lost their jobs in 72 digital companies.
