Biden's biographer does not rule out him not competing in 2024: "It wouldn't be a total shock"

Franklin Foer summarized the president's first two years in the White House and did not rule out anything ahead of the next election.

Franklin Foer will soon publish the biography of Joe Biden's first two years in the Oval Office: the book is titled "The Last Politician: Inside Joe Biden's White House and the Fight for America's Future." In addition to narrating behind-the-scenes of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the journalist of The Atlantic even made some predictions about the 2024 presidential elections. To the surprise of many, he did not rule out that the current president decline his candidacy.

In an interview with NBC, the biographer was asked by Chuck Todd about his writing and the upcoming election. Specifically, he wanted to know how surprised he would be if the president chose not to seek a second term, given that he would start at age 82.

"I would say It would be a surprise to me. But it wouldn't be a total surprise. It wouldn't be a total shock," replied Foer. "When he talks about his life, he uses this word, fate, constantly. Joe Biden is a very religious guy, and fate is a word loaded with religious meaning. And he always talks about 'he can't say where fate goes.' And so I always, when I hear that, to me, it's the ellipses in the sentence when he's talking about his own future."

Biden announced in early 2023 his intention to seek a second term, thus dismissing the intention of the most progressive Democrats to replace him with another candidate. However, since then, many rumors have not completely closed the door to the president finally deciding not to run.

One of the names that has been gaining momentum as a possible Democratic nominee is that of Gavin Newsom. For example, a Rasmussen Reports poll found that 36% of likely Democratic voters would be happy with a primary between Biden and the governor of California.

"He is carrying out different personal strategies to be one of Joe Biden's rivals in the Democratic primaries. Many - if not all - through a Political Action Committee (PAC) he founded in March called the Newsom Democracy Campaign. Newsom's purposes through that PAC are to create a constitutional amendment for gun control and take on Republican governors from other states," Voz Media recently reported.
