150 Democrats voted against deporting aliens convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol

The House of Representatives approved legislation allowing the deportation of foreigners (non-citizens) who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, what was striking about the matter was that 150 Democrats voted against it, even drawing the attention of Elon Musk, who criticized them on social networks.

At the end of the vote, which took place on Thursday afternoon, HR 6976 had 274 votes in favor and 150 against. Although 59 Democrats joined all Republicans in the majority, the rest came out against the bill sponsored by Congressman Barry Moore (R-AL).

According to the legislation, "driving while intoxicated or impaired a ground for (1) barring a non-U.S. national (alien under federal law) from admission into the United States, or (2) deporting the individual."

"The bar to admission shall apply to an individual who has been convicted of the offense or has admitted to having committed the acts which constitute the elements of the offense. As a ground for deportability, the individual must have been convicted of the offense," explains the Lower House website.

The House Judiciary Committee, led by Jim Jordan (R-OH), published a criticism of the congressmen who opposed Moore's text on social networks. "155 House Democrats voted today against deporting criminal migrants who commit social security fraud. They'd rather protect illegal aliens than our seniors," they wrote.

"Every 45 minutes. That's how often someone in the United States dies in a crash involving an alcohol-impaired driver. In 2021 alone, there were 13,384 alcohol-related driving fatalities. In the same year, drunk driving crashes led to nearly 400,000 injuries and deaths. Those crashes don't discriminate — it could be me, it could be you, or it could be one of our family members," the legislation's author noted.

"This issue hits close to home for me. There was a newlywed couple from my hometown of Enterprise, Alabama, named Angel and Jeremy Seay. I knew them personally. Angel and Jeremy were riding their motorcycle together when an illegal immigrant under the influence of alcohol collided into them with his pickup. Their lives were cut dramatically short. Sadly, tragedies like this are not uncommon across our country," Moore said.

Elon Musk's response

The situation caught the attention of Elon Musk himself, who also expressed himself on his X account, formerly known as Twitter. "The madness continues!" he wrote in response to the House Judiciary Committee.
