Gallery: Elizabeth II with the presidents of the United States

The Queen of Great Britain reigned for over 70 years. In that time, there have been 14 presidents; she met 13 of them.

If there are two countries whose alliance has been strong since the dawn of the 20th century, it is that of the United States and the United Kingdom of Great Britain. That alliance was forged during World War I, when the country emerged from isolationism under Woodrow Wilson, and was definitively sealed during the post-war period and World War II.

Elizabeth II began her reign on the ashes of a war-torn Europe, divided after communism's grip throughout the territory. However, the new institutional architecture (United Nations, Bretton Woods) seemed to point towards a more multilateral and cooperative world, at least among democracies.

February 6, 1952 marked the beginning of her reign. When this photo was taken with President Harry Truman, the British crown had not yet been placed on her head; she was replacing her father, who was in failing health. The presidential couple welcomed Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh at the Blair House, which was the Truman family residence.
