Pope Leo XIV underwent "successful" surgery on Tuesday for a lung nodule at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy, a facility where leaders of the Catholic Church go for medical checkups or to be treated for any injuries or conditions.

The Vatican confirmed that the operation was successful and that Robert Prevost is in good condition.

"The procedure was completed successfully, within the expected timeframe and as planned, and the Holy Father has returned to his room," the Vatican press office stated on Telegram, according to reports by AFP.

Leo XIV was admitted in the early afternoon (local time) and underwent surgery a few hours later. The operation, led by Dr. Stefano Margaritora, was low-risk.

The Holy See has estimated that the pope's recovery period will last about a week, and he has had to cancel his upcoming official engagements.

Prevost is scheduled to travel to South America between November 6 and 17. He will visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
