Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery for a lung nodule this Tuesday at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy, a facility where leaders of the Catholic Church often go for medical checkups or to be treated for injuries or illnesses.

The surgery is scheduled for this afternoon. Leo XIV was admitted to the hospital around 1:10 p.m. local time.

This operation marks the first time Robert Prevost has undergone surgery since his election as pope on May 8, 2025.

On Sunday, Leo XIV explained after the Angelus prayer that the doctors "consider it advisable to perform surgery, and therefore, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it."

According to the Vatican, Prevost's recovery could last approximately one week, requiring him to cancel all his official engagements.

Leo XIV is scheduled to travel to South America from Nov. 6 to 17. He will visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
