A new high-voltage power line connecting Romania and the Republic of Moldova will be named after President Donald Trump, according to an announcement by the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau.
The project, called the 'Trump Liberty Line', will be backed by a $130 million investment from the U.S. government and will aim to strengthen Moldova's energy security and independence.
The infrastructure will connect the power stations in Strășeni, Moldova, and Gutinaș, Romania, via a 400-kilovolt overhead line. On Moldovan territory, it will span about 45 miles, while the Romanian section will extend for approximately another 90 miles, according to the Moldovan state-owned company Moldelectrica.
In addition, the project includes the modernization of the Strășeni substation and the installation of two autotransformers to integrate the 330-kV infrastructure with the new 400-kV grid.
A commitment to reducing energy dependence
The future connection will be the third high-voltage line between Moldova and Romania. The Moldovan government has presented the project as a strategic move to bring its electricity system closer to the European Union market and reduce its energy vulnerability.
Moldova has historically depended on supplies from Russia and on regional connections vulnerable to disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine. In recent years, the government in Chisinau has strengthened its energy ties with Romania and other Western partners.
The U.S. Embassy also noted that the project will open up opportunities for U.S. companies in areas such as transmission infrastructure, grid optimization, information and communication technologies, nuclear energy and battery storage.
The working group tasked with advancing the initiative is composed of the Moldovan Ministry of Energy, Moldelectrica, the U.S. company Black & Veatch and the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau.
