Gabriel Attal appointed as new prime minister of France
The 34-year-old politician previously led the country's Ministry of Education and Youth.
Emmanuel Macron appointed Gabriel Attal as Prime Minister of France on Tuesday. The 34-year-old politician replaces Élisabeth Borne, becoming the youngest person in the country's history and the first openly homosexual politician to hold this position:
Until now, Attal was the Minister of Education and Youth, a position he took over on July 20, 2023. A former member of the Socialist Party, Attal joined Macron's new political movement in 2016. After this, he was the official government spokesperson from 2020 to 2022, the year in which the French president appointed him budget minister, a position he held until July 20, 2023.
Gabriel Attal replaces Élisabeth Borne, the second woman to hold this position in France. Borne handed in her resignation this Monday. AP found out that she did so at the "will" of the president who wanted to "appoint a new prime minister," especially after her approval ratings dropped after approving unpopular measures such as pension reform or the immigration law.
