Mexico and Costa Rica sealed early passes to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Gold Cup by beating Suriname 2-0 and Dominican Republic 2-1, respectively, on Wednesday in the second day of Group A at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
In the first match, Costa Rica came from behind to beat Dominican Republic 2-1.
The Costa Rican squad found the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute with an attacking strike from the center circle. The attack began with a ball from Pablo Rosario, Edarlyn Reyes and Dorny Romero followed up with a play that ended in the penalty area where Joao Urbáez finished off a ball rejected by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Manfred Ugalde evened the score 1-1 with a penalty kick in the 44th minute. The 'Sele' 9 reached three goals in the tournament, all with shots from the 11-meter spot.
In the 85th minute, Ugalde slipped a pass into the Dominican penalty area and there appeared Josimar Alcocer to make it 2-1 with a touch in front of goalkeeper Xavier Valdez.
In the second game of the day, Mexico defeated Suriname 2-0 with a brace by center back César Montes from set pieces.
In the 57th minute, after a corner kick from the left, Cachorro Montes scored with a header to make it 1-0.

Six minutes later, from another corner kick, this time from the right, Montes' header was blocked, but the defender was sprawled out on the ground and headed into the six-yard box to make it 2-0 and take his tally to three goals in the tournament.
With their victories on Wednesday, Mexico and Costa Rica reached six points, but the Aztecs topped Group A on goal difference: 3 to 2.
On Sunday, the Tri and the Sele will face off for the group lead at Allegiant Stadium, in Paradise, Nevada.
The Dominican Republic and Suriname, with two defeats to their credit, have already sealed their elimination, and will meet on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The second matchday of Group D will be played this Thursday. At Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas, Trinidad and Tobago will face Haiti. Saudi Arabia and the United States will play at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.
