(AFP) The White House on Friday sent a proposed defense budget to Congress for $1.5 trillion for 2027, at a time when the United States faces significant spending due to the war in Iran.
If approved, military spending would increase from $1 trillion in 2026 to $1.5 trillion in 2027, according to the document submitted to Congress.
It would be the largest increase since World War II, according to the US press, and would imply a 42% increase in the Pentagon's overall budget.
Non-military spending would decrease 10% (about $73 billion), through the "reduction or elimination of progressive, politicized and wasteful programs."
The United States is by far the country with the highest defense budget.
