Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers will resign from OpenAI's board of directors and stop teaching at Harvard after emails linking him to Jeffrey Epstein were made public. It was also learned that he resigned as an advisor to the International Advisory Board of Santander Bank.

The emails revealed that Summers was in close communication with the late sex offender, forcing him to announce his retirement from public life on Monday. Summers became so influential that he was referred to as a member of the "Committee to Save the World."

Summers served as Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton and president of Harvard University in the 2000s.

"In line with my announcement to step away from my public commitments, I have also decided to resign from the board of OpenAI," which he had served on since 2023, Summers said in a statement to U.S. media, including CNN and The New York Times.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward to following their progress," the former official added about the company that created ChatGPT.

Summers has said he is "ashamed" of his communication with Epstein, but denies wrongdoing.

The renewed public controversy surrounding Jeffrey Epstein has dominated political debate in the United States in recent weeks, sparking a showdown between lawmakers and President Donald Trump.

The Republican tycoon on Wednesday signed into law a bill requiring the disclosure of government documents about the case.

Epstein's case

Epstein, a powerful financier, moved in elite circles for years, cultivating close ties to business tycoons, politicians, academics and celebrities, for whom he was accused of trafficking girls and young women for sex.

He committed suicide in his jail cell in August 2019.
