Horas antes del inicio de la Convención Nacional Republicana (RNC), Donald Trump anunció a JD Vance como compañero de fórmula para las elecciones presidenciales del 2024. Tras la elección de Mike Pence en 2016, el ahora nominado republicano optó por el senador de Ohio, quien eventualmente podría convertirse en uno de los vicepresidentes más jóvenes de la historia. Senadores, gobernadores y líderes de opinión conservadores celebraron la decisión, mientras que los demócratas lo atacaron por sus posiciones políticas.
Trump fue el encargado de comunicar su decisión a través de su cuenta de Truth Social, donde explicó brevemente los motivos que lo llevaron a Vance, descartando en el proceso a nombres como Marco Rubio, Doug Burgum y Tim Scott, entre otros.
"Tras largas deliberaciones y reflexiones, y teniendo en cuenta el enorme talento de muchos otros, he decidido que la persona más adecuada para asumir el cargo de vicepresidente de los Estados Unidos es el Senador J.D. Vance, del Gran Estado de Ohio. Horas después del anuncio, se confirmó que Kamala Harris aceptó debatir con Vance. Aunque todavía no se confirmó la fecha, CBS News será el medio de comunicación encargado de organizar el evento. Según informó CNN, Vance se enteró de que había sido elegido unos 20 minutos antes de la publicación de Trump.
El senador de Ohio desató el entusiasmo dentro del GOP, dado que senadores, gobernadores y líderes de opinión de varios espectros ideológicos del partido celebraron su elección en las redes sociales. Entre ellos se destacaron Rubio, Jim Jordan, Ben Shapiro, Chris Sununu, Ben Carson, Mike Johnson, Ted Cruz y el gobernador Mike DeWine, quien será el encargado de elegir al reemplazo de Vance en caso de que el ticket republicano se imponga en noviembre.
